I agree - this is really something. As has been noted, it's just huge the increase in a short amount of time - the original Core release was only a short while back, then Core 2 Duo - which just made it into the iMacs - and now the Core 2 Quad release date of Mid-October! The pace is just astounding.

Not only that, but as Arn and others note, the Quad Xeons are on the way as well. So, there is the path for 8 core Mac Pros in the very near future.

Quad core iMacs, 8 core PMs (opps, I mean Mac Pros) - oh my.

This amazing chip release rate - and significant increases each - will really put Apple to the test in terms of updating products quickly to stay competitive in terms of hardware release. In the past, Apple had to deal with chip upgrades so infrequently. It's a great problem to have, I suppose.

I also echo the comments above re: isn't this the kind of thing that makes you glad Apple switched to Intel? Absolutely.Thank you. Over on page 13 of the September 12th Event Predictions (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=2821628&postcount=302) string they are insulting me as insane and that this is no biggie.

I think they've all gone Movie Store iPod Nano crazy. If I had just pulled the trigger on an iMac or a Mac Pro I think I would be a little sick to hear this news. I guess we can speculate Apple could be late to the C2Q systems party. But I agree with you they really need to be on time given we all know the C2Q processor is out there.

I think what we're seeing is a flood of new generation processors hitting the streets in rapid fire succession that won't always be quite as often in future.

I think there is an error on the iMac performance page.

    It shows:

    For i5
    283912

    Then for i7
    283913

Shouldn't it show faster performance for the i7?

I sent an email to someone who works on their website asking them to double check that.:D

I thught was strange as well at first, but I believe that the comparison is between i5 1st gen vs 2nd gen and i7 1st gen vs 2nd gen.

Yes that's right. I always have Activity Monitor on so I can see exactly what's going on with my four cores. I have the sort on the percentage column on the left followed by the application name and then I stick it in the lower right corner of my two screens. By keeping it open I can make sure nothing has crashed. It looks like Activity Monitor is the best approach then. Thanks though!

Well I am 100% certian four is not enough. But I have read there may be diminishing returns beyond 16 perhaps even beyond 8 - I have no idea.We haven't hit that wall yet. ;)

Exactly. A perfect example where one application topping out on only one core leaves the entire other one for other stuff. Probably a good thing to have that limit.

In fact, in future, I could see where application developers let the user in preferences tell the application how many cores to be allowed to use. Give the user a choice of how many cores he/she wants a particular process to use. That would be a way cool improvement in all application preferences.I have to agree. Single or multi core affinity would let you pick and maximize your usage.

Been waiting to get one for a while now. :o

I do hope that the backlit keyboard comes to the 11.5 inch.

Bummed about Intel's graphics. I was hoping in some kind of settlement. :(

There was a settlement. Intel gave NVIDIA $1.5 billion to go away. Unfortunately, that means Intel integrated graphics for the foreseeable future.

Well, wasn't the iMac G5 restricted to 2GB, yet it was a 64-bit processor?

The last revision of the iMac G5 (the one with the iSight) had the option of 2.5GB of RAM. It had 512MB built-in and you could option a 2GB stick for the 1 open slot it had.

That 2GB of course cost an arm and a leg...

What's hard in the U.S. is that most people make a modest or poor salary--yet the culture is very materialistic and there is a lot of pressure to buy so many luxury goods and services. At least in third world countries, your friends aren't pressuring you to take extravagant vacations you can't afford or go out to expensive restaurants.

You also need to add in the ball and chain that is suburban/exurban hell. Some people are chained to their five acres willingly, but many are chained to suburbia due to poor planning caused by cheap oil. The added expense of owning two or three vehicles and maintaining a suburban home on a suburban sized lot, means a lot less money for other things. People bought into the false promises of suburbia and are now paying the price.

I think Core Duo aren't 64-bit processors or whatever. That might be where the confusion came in.

Right. You won't get the full 64 bit native benfits of Leopard without either a G5 or a Core 2 Duo processor.

It'll still run on a G4 just fine.

just like the iPhone would never sell?

I can clearly remember watching ballmer laugh at the iPhone pre-launch, even at that time it was ridiculous. But now that reality is being rubbed in his face its even funnier.

Predictions mean nothing, all these companys seem to think saying something makes it so. You notice apple NEVER says something like "by everyone will want an iPhone" ...because apple is busy making it actually happen.

This device is precisely why I haven't replaced my Airport Express (see sig). I sure hope this turns out to be true because this is exactly what I've been waiting for!

New nano and 23" iMac would be sweet too, although I don't need a new computer so it doesn't really affect me much.

    What?:)

This is true I read this a while back and it was brought up today on a d.a.p site i frequent. Creatives TravelDock 900 speakers have an ipod shuffle connected to it on the box.

Kind of an interesting history note of digital audio players made back in 2004.

    The above text contains:
Strawman argument/claiming what I said wasn't true without providing any proof/Insults

    Here's another recap for you:
Person 1: Thunderbolt = Mac Only
    You: Bingo
Me: Post to an article showing that it won't be Mac only
You: Claim you were talking metaphorically to save your ass
Myself and Econgeek: Explain to you why what you saved your ass with won't be true
You: Go on a rampage of insults

    Pot, meet kettle.
I'll respond to you one last time, to try to clarify your confusion.

Strawman argument/claiming what I said wasn't true without providing any proof/Insults No. You are confusing these with facts. I've pointed out to you each time you have made something up in my reply.

Person 1: Thunderbolt = Mac Only True. In the same way FW is 'Mac only'. You perhaps don't understand the difference between speaking literally and effectively. Effectively, FW is considered 'Mac only' yet is available to any vendor that wants to implement it. But the lack of interest has resulted in it being considered 'Mac only'. Not literally, but effectively. See the difference?
    You: Bingo True.
Me: Post to an article showing that it won't be Mac only False. You posted an article that said others could use it. Nowhere in your article did it say others would use it. I explained this to you, but again, you missed the point. Firewire isn't literally Mac only either.
You: Claim you were talking metaphorically to save your ass False. I don't think you understand what a metaphor is, because you aren't using it right. I claimed, and the OP later explained, it was meant, in context, effectively Mac only. Seriously, this is highschool english.
Myself and Econgeek: Explain to you why what you saved your ass with won't be trueFalse. Econogeek did well in explaining how the situations differ. You explained nothing.
You: Go on a rampage of insults False. No insults. Just observations. If you made a lot of spelling errors and I pointed them out, that would be an observation, not an insult. You both misunderstood posts and made up claims of statements that did not exist. I pointed that out. If you felt insulted, you are being overly sensitive.

I've always felt the sheer number of applications available for the iphone was a huge advantage to the platform. But if this bad press continues Apple will lose this advantage. I want quality applications not junk.

What bothers me most about the above is the inability of anyone in charge to THINK. They just blindly follow "rules" laid out without stopping to use their greatest gift; their brains.

Apple needs to get on top of this right away. They need to understand this is a learning process and adapt/amend procedures that don't work. I appreciate that they are trying to do, but junk still gets through and quality is being driven away in frustration. :(

This from Intel's Technology Brief on Thunderbolt Technology:

Users can add high-performance features to
their PC over a cable, daisy chaining one after another, up to a total
of 7 devices, 1 or 2 of which can be high-resolution DisplayPort
v1.1a displays (depending on the controller configuration in the host
    PC).

So does this mean 3 external monitors once we can daisy chain? (I'm assuming one is the internal display.)

The $100 million settlement grants Apple a license to use Creative's patents in all of its products including the iPod. Also announced is that Creative is joining Apple's "Made for iPod" program, and will be introducing an array of iPod accessories later this year.
WOW. And I thought hell froze over when bootcamp was introduced...
